Cosmetic neurotoxins (brands Botox® and Dysport®) are an affordable and effective solution for treating fine lines and preventing wrinkles from deepening. They have one of the highest satisfaction rates in the aesthetic industry. Their popularity is quickly growing, with millions of men and women considering neurotoxins a regular occurrence in their personal up-keep routine.
What do neurotoxins treat?
Neurotoxins treat moderate to severe lines and wrinkles usually between the brows (11s), the forehead and around the eyes (crow’s feet). There are many ways neurotoxins can be used to soften lines and gently ease the signs of aging. Talk to your provider about all of your concerns.
What are neurotoxins?
Neurotoxins are naturally derived, safe injectable liquids that relax the muscles preventing over-movement and the creation of creases and lines for a beautifully refreshed look. Cosmetic neurotoxins contain tiny amounts of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein.
Who is/is not a good candidate for neurotoxin injections?
Most are good candidates for this treatment, but let your provider know if you have any neurological issues or allergies.
Where on the body can neurotoxins be used?
Most commonly, cosmetic neurotoxins are used for the treatment of lines and wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet), between the brows (11’s), brow lift (opens the eye area), and for smoothing forehead furrows. Other areas treated include just above the bow of the upper lip or the area on each side of the mouth.
How do neurotoxins work?
After about 4-7 days post injection, the treatment works to inhibit the muscle receptors preventing movement. This smooths creases and wrinkles for a refreshed and relaxed look.
Are the injections painful?
No. The injections are done with a very small needle, and nearly everyone tolerates the treatment with zero numbing cream.
How long do the neurotoxins last?
You will start to see the effects in 4 to 7 days with full effect in 2 weeks. The typical treatment lasts between 3-6 months, depending on how quickly the body metabolizes the substance.
How many treatments do I need?
The product only requires one treatment, but the number of units per patient varies based on your personal concerns and goals. The correction is temporary, and you will require future treatment to maintain optimal results.
How do I prepare for my appointment?
There is not much preparation involved. The provider will remove any makeup or products in the areas to be injected. The skin will also be prepped with a topical antiseptic to prevent the introduction of bacteria during the injections.
What should I do or expect post treatment?
Your provider may advise you to not lay flat for 4 hours post treatment, avoid exercise, alcohol, saunas and hot tubs for 24 hours post treatment.
What are the common risks, side effect or concerns?
As with any injection, you may experience injection site side effects such as redness, pain or swelling. These are infrequent, short term and can be treated with ice packs. If you experience muscle drooping such as around the eye or brow, consult your provider.
